Fly away home

As I saunter up the steps, I catch a glimpse of something foreign. Closer inspection reveals the first ladybug of spring, sitting very still, hitching a ride on the back of my hand.

Mindful of her tiny, hair-like legs, I try to slide an ivy leaf under the small, compact body. She skitters in the opposite direction. Is it the warmth or texture of my skin that attracts my little friend, or does she find the leaf distasteful? I’m fascinated by the asymmetrical spots on the perfectly oval body, and the fact that this tiny creature can transform in a flash to take flight.

I turn my hand and try again, and the minuscule legs, barely visible under the hard, shiny shell, finally accept the leaf. She scampers first to the top and then to the underside of her new home, and remains safely out of sight.

  1. It must have been lady bug release day this weekend, since I saw my first lady bug resting on my mom’s shoulder this weekend!

You did a fabulous job of describing the fine details of the little ladybug and the experience of your encounter. I wonder if you could feel her scamper across your hand, or if she was so light, you knew she was there only because you could see her?

  2. I really like that you were able to notice such a small event–the ladybug–and then really expand the beauty of the moment with your rich descrption.

Your piece really brings home what draws me to exercise of appreciatve writing: being able to almost dive into the everyday environment and pull up something totally unexpected and new.

I wonder if there were any little insights that you drew from the experience?
